In 1999 Dermatologic Surgery published a study that stated using a topical solution of Vitamin E oil on scare tissue during the healing process provided no benefits with regards to reducing the appearance of scar tissue. Not only that, but a large part of the group in the study actually had scars that were MORE noticeable after vitamin E treatment.

Antioxidants such as vitamin E are great treatments to use for scar treatment but you may want to look to other sources than vitamin E oil.

There is often a big misconception that acne blemishes such as pimples and zits are caused by dirty skin. What this usually leads to is aggressive over cleaning of the face which may not be helping you at all and only end up damaging the skin. What’s more, using heavy soaps and other cleansers excessively can leave residue on your face which can clog pores - the REAL cause of acne blemishes and breakouts.

When attempting to keep the skin clean and avoid unsightly breakouts - think twice a day cleaning with a mild cleanser and above all think GENTLE.

Vitamin C can have wonderful benefits for skin care and have been used quite a bit in anti-aging treatments. There is a great post about this on the skinMD blog but is important to realize that vitamin C can also irritate sensitive skin and the aggravation may not be worth the trouble.

Sensitive skin is probably the skin type that is the most selective in terms of what products it will tolerate. Some people have suggested using a product heavy in vitamin C (or even crushing vitamin C tablets and applying them directly to the skin while mixed in with lotion or facial clay) to actually desensitize the skin and make it more tolerable to a wider range of products.

Just be aware that you may be in for some discomfort along the way.

There’s no shortage of skin care products out there to choose from but all you really need to do is focus on finding three major tools in your fight against bad skin:

  • A good Cleanser
  • A good Toner
  • A good Moisturizer

Cleansers that are formulated for your skin type are a first pass to remove the pollutants, makeup, dead cells and other gunk that gets caught in your skin. Available in cream, foam, gel and liquid based products, a good cleanser is a good friend.

Skin Toner (astringent) picks up where skin cleansers leave off and deep clean the stuff that cleansers couldn’t get to. Some toners can be harsh so, again, it’s a good idea to make sure you look for formulas that are geared towards your skin type (astringents can over dry skin and aggravate oily skin conditions).

Moisturizers, the skin care product with the highest profile of the bunch. A good moisturizer with emollients and essential oils can go a long way in nourishing the skin and helping with hydration. Oily skin will want a lightweight moisturizer and dry skin a more robust (heavier) approach.

Stick with the big three and you’ll have a solid foundation around which to build the perfect skin care regimen for you.
